Lightning pictures from 23-07-01 at 0:45 - 3:45 am (local time), Ghent, Belgium.

E  -  First 2 pictures were taken from a distant storm (direction of view is south), before the main storm ignited overhead. Between 1:30am and 2am, this overhead storm was good for a frequency of 44 discharges/minute in the area (that's rare over here), unfortunately most being intracloud. 3rd picture is one of few cg's from that one (missed 2 others, one of them looking thick and orange, probably wrapped in heavy rain, and from these two, one caused a fire in a house at the other side of the city). Pictures 4 to 7 were taken after the the main storm overhead (around 3am, view is south again), from a new, not very active (impulsive) distant storm (but I prefer these anyway, they give more time and distance to consider best results, the overhead storm flashing all the time is to confusing). Should have zoomed more to get closer pictures, though the strike area was quite wide... But taking the risk anyway could yield 1 good picture and a few busts instead of this mediocrity.
Capturing video isn't worth the trouble, it doesn't show much. (And I didn't wanted to upset some with my cursing within the rare moments without thunder..)
Also: 2 pictures of a halo display with balloons at july 20th, 2001, at about 8:45pm local time (with polarization filter).

T  -  Technical (settings for lightning only)

  • Camera: Canon Eos 500
  • Lens: Canon AF 35 - 105
  • Slide film: Fuji Sensia II 100
  • F:6.5 except for the close strike: F:8
  • Exposure: Bulb setting, with Canon RS60-E3 'running lock' electronic cable release, no fixed time settings (approx 3 min.) Longest exposures yield some orange glow from reflected street lights against the low clouds and air moisture.
